The Willits Unified School District serves 1550 students in grades TK–12 from the City of Willits and surrounding areas. Committed to the small campus environment our district is composed of four traditional schools: Brookside Elementary (TK-2), Blosser Lane Elementary (3-5), Baechtel Grove Middle School (6-8), and Willits High School (9-12). In addition to our traditional schools our alternative programs offer students a variety of choices within our district’s governance: Sherwood Elementary (K-5), Sanhedrin Continuation High (9-12), and New Horizons Independent Study (K-12).
Dear Parents, Staff and Community Members,
Changes for WUSD in 2017:
Our Elementary Schools: Brookside, Blosser and Sherwood have upgraded curriculum in both Reading and Math. The new materials are nationally recognized programs allowing students’ ability and progress to be checked multiple times throughout the year.
Sherwood School will expand to grades K-8 next year. Bussing will be available however, the routes will be limited. Sherwood provides the same curriculum as Brookside and Blosser Lane but in a multi-age classroom setting where students can move between grade levels based on ability (please note there are no special education services available at Sherwood School). The small classroom sizes, country setting and thematic instruction make it a quality alternative for students and parents. Enrollment is limited and interested families should move quickly to register.
Baechtel Grove Middle School is implementing a new schedule that provides for 20% more time in core classes and additional elective choices, including the restoration of Art and Music courses. The new schedule provides two person team teaching in 6th grade, core teachers in 7th grade, and single subject (high school certified teachers) in 8th grade. BGMS will continue to provide AVID, WEB Link, Odyssey of the Mind, Art Club and more.
New Horizons Independent Study Program grades 9-12 will be incorporated into Willits High School as a school within the school. This change will allow students the ability to work independently as well as take advantage of direct instruction at the high school if they choose. Independent Study for elementary students, grades K-8 will be run through Sherwood Elementary School.
Sanhedrin Alternative High School will transform into a vocational high school with the focus that all students graduate with usable and employable skills. Students will take their core instruction at Sanhedrin and be placed into a vocational program at Willits High school.
Willits High School will be changing to a trimester schedule, providing greater opportunities for students. This schedule allows students to focus on fewer classes each day with longer class periods and move towards increased student achievement.
Please check out our school improvement video on our district webpage with more information and details. As we work towards the close of this school year we are anxiously preparing for improvement at each school site and in every classroom.
